What Router Do I Use with the D1600?
Can I use my router with the D1600 and attachments? We recommend a minimum of 1.5 HP (9-10 amps). The D1600 requires a router with a ½" or 8mm collet to use with the included 8mm shank cutters. A ½" to 8mm collet reducer is included as standard equipment. A plunge router is also recommended for Isoloc templates but is not required for the D1600 and Finger joint template.
Why does Leigh use template guidebushes instead of bearings? Conventional guides are much more versatile than shank mounted bearings. Bearings severely limit the range of board thicknesses, joint sizes and pin and tail spacing on joinery jigs.
Do I need to use Leigh's template guidebushes? The router industry isn't standardized, so you may need to use Leigh's template guidebush and a mounting adaptor system (GBS) to match your router to Leigh Jigs and Attachments. Note: The Leigh 711TP, included with the D1600, is a universal style template guidebush with nut. Many routers accept this guide directly or come with an adaptor made to fit them.
Note: Some template guide bushings have very short barrels and are not recommended for the D1600 and D4R dovetail jigs. The barrel length on Leigh template guide bushings is .265” (just over ¼”). Shorter barrels or barrels that are recessed in the router base may cause the router bit to come in contact with the finger bar.
